Glenkerrin Group Obtains Planning Permission for Iconic Tower on Canary Wharf Site
Award winning Irish developer the Glenkerrin Group has obtained final approval from
London Lord Mayor Boris Johnson for planning permission for a major residential
and commercial site in the heart of Canary Wharf. Glenkerrin are delighted that
they have received the go ahead for this landmark £600m development which has been
designed by renowned architects Foster + Partners. The development will feature
the tallest residential building in Europe.
The development comprises of two adjacent sites – Island Point and City Pride. Glenkerrin's
vision is to create a world class 62 storey tower which will comprise of 430 residential
units, and a 220 bedroom 5* star hotel, conference facilities, signature restaurant,
fine dining, cafes, spa zone, pool and four levels of top end amenities.
The Greater London Authority added its approval to that of the local authority stating
that the applications are consistent with London Plan Policy and concluded ' the
principle of the redevelopment of both sites Island Point and City pride to provide
residential led developments is in the interest of good strategic planning in London’.
JP Morgan is set to move its European headquarters to Canary Wharf after Songbird
Estates, the majority owner of the London Business district, signed a deal with
the US bank of £237m for the privilege. JP Morgan will move into a new 1.9m
sq ft development which would make it the largest tenant at the Riverside South
site adjacent to the City Pride site.
Crossrail, London's first new major railway in a generation was launched in
May of this year by the Mayor of London Borris Johnson and the Prime Minister Gordon
Brown.
The renamed Canary Wharf station will be the first Crossrail station to be constructed,
and includes plans for 100,000 square feet of retail space and a roof-top park.
Crossrail services will begin operating from 2017 cutting journey times across London
allowing travel from Canary Wharf to Liverpool Street in 7 minutes, Paddington in
17 minutes and Heathrow in 44 minutes.
The new railway will bring 1.5 million people within 60 minutes' commute of London's
major business districts with over 200 million passengers expected to use the railway
in its first year of operation.
